What is the DNA Database for Gypsy Horses?
The DNA Database has been collecting and accepting DNA profiles of Gypsy Horses since 2010. All of the DNA markers from the DNA profile are entered into the database and compared to the markers of the other horses in the database.
We look for horses that match on all markers. Parents and offspring will have a matching letter within each marker (with the exception of LEX3). Combined with the background information we receive from each horse, we interpret the search results from the database and provide the owner with the results.
Why use the DNA Database for Gypsy Horses?
We have been working with, and are prepared to work with, all studbooks worldwide, but we are not a studbook. This means we hold the DNA of Gypsy Horses worldwide, regardless of the studbook they are registered in.
We do not provide DNA profiles to studbooks without the owner's permission.
Can I use your search results to have the passport of my horse officially updated with its pedigree?
The search results we provide are suggestive. The only way to get the pedigree of your horse updated is through official parentage testing done by a certified lab.
However, our search results can point you in the right direction. We connect the owners of horses that could be related and guide you in your quest to get the newly found parentage verified by a lab.
I think my horse has a famous grandparent. Can you check that?
The comparison we do only works for parents and children. It is not possible to find grandparents without having the DNA of the parent in between these two generations.
However, sometimes we can see in the search results that a certain bloodline could be related. These results are purely suggestive and could be incorrect.
Will you keep the DNA of my horse safe?
The DNA of your horse will not be provided to anyone unless you specifically give us permission to do so.
Is it possible that you find no matches for my horse?
Yes, this is possible and not uncommon. It is also possible that we do find matches, but the results are vague or inconclusive.
Even if no match is found, this information can still be valuable. You will know which horses or bloodlines your horse is not related to, which can help in making informed breeding decisions.
Will you update me?
Yes, new DNA is added to the database regularly. If we find a new match, you will be contacted at the email address you provided on the registration form.
I have a lot of horses. Can you offer me a special price?
If you own more than three horses, please reach out to us, and we will look into options to make it more affordable for you. If you wish to donate the DNA to the database without receiving a Search Results Report, you can do so for free.
Why do I have to pay?
The database ran on donations for 14 years. Due to the high demand for our service and the need to streamline our work process, we now charge a fee per Search Result Report (€59).
How quickly will I receive my results?
After we receive your order and full payment, it will take 5-10 business days before you receive your results.
How will you provide me with the results?
You will receive a DNA Database Search Result Document, which is a PDF document containing the search results for your horse.
